Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare my piece?

Simple Green or any grease cutting cleaner works best (do not use Murphy’s Oil Soap). If your pieces have been waxed (Pledge, Endust, Murphy’s Oil, Lemon Oil, Guardman), or have grease build up, you will need to step it up a notch. Clean your piece using straight white vinegar (undiluted) or Mineral Spirits to remove the residue. Once dry, wipe the surface down with a clean damp cloth. Cottage Paints’ Furniture Cleaner and Prep is also an excellent option, requiring no extra wipe down.

Do I need to sand or strip my furniture before applying these paints?

No, that’s the beauty and simplicity of these paints, clean your surface properly and you are ready to paint.

How durable are the paints? Will it chip off?

The paints we carry do not have latex in them and they will not chip and flake with time, like traditional paints do. As far as durability, each paint line and paint type offers it’s own strengths.

  • Reclaim has a sealer in the paint, and once cured it is extremely durable and washable.
  • Country Living Paints are equally as durable, but do not have a sealer in them, so they will dry more matte.
  • The Botanical Paints will dry and stay put, but will be very chalky matte/flat. Typically, for washability, or for more ‘sheen’ a topcoat will be desired over the Country Living and Botanical paints for that reason.
  • American Paint Company’s chalk-clay paints require a topcoat. The painted finish will gain it’s durability from it’s topcoat. A wax topcoat will offer a softer finish, more decorative, whereas APC’s Topcoat Finish and/or Hard Coat Finish will provide a harder, more durable paint finish.
  • Cottage Paint clay-mineral paints are pretty durable as well, once cured. A topcoat is preferred for high traffic areas, or for finishes requiring washability.

It is important to remember – your piece is still a piece of furniture and should be cared for like any other piece of furniture. Table tops I would use care and always protect with coasters under my drinks.

How do I prepare my piece?

A mild dirt and grease cutting agent like Simple Green and Spic/Span works great for most surfaces.    IF your piece has ever been waxed (Pledge, Endust, Lemon Oil, Guardsman) or has been cleaned with Murphy’s Oil Soap,  or if you are unsure,  then play it safe and use something like  Mineral Spirits or White Vinegar (undiluted).

Wipe down your surface thoroughly with the proper cleaning agent, then once dry give your surface another quick damp wipe to remove  any residue from the cleaner.

If you want quick and easy, we carry a product specifically made for cleaning, by Cottage Paint, called Furniture Cleaner and Prep.  It is a spray on cleaner that removes dirt, oil, grime and waxy film and leaves no soapy residue so you do not have to re wipe your surface after cleaning.
